MP Ganeshmurthy dies at the age of 77, consumed poison after not getting ticket

Ganeshmurthi, the Member of Parliament (MP) for Erode, was reportedly on the verge of suicide at his home when he was hospitalized on March 24. His application to run in the Lok Sabha elections was turned down. On March 24, at his Erode home, MP and senior Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK) leader A. Ganeshmurthi allegedly tried to kill himself by eating poison. After he was discovered unconscious, family members hurried him to a nearby private hospital, where he was given some medical attention. He later died at the Kovai Medical Center and Hospital (KMCH) in Coimbatore after being moved there.

Tamil Nadu’s Minister of Housing and Urban Development, E. Muthusamy, Modakurichi MLA C. Saraswathi, former minister V. Ramalingam, and MDMK General Secretary Vaiko were among those who paid him a visit in the hospital. According to sources close to MDMK, three-time Lok Sabha MP Ganeshmurthi was told that he was being considered for the 2026 assembly elections, but when he turned down the ticket this time, a complicated personal situation arose, sending him into a terrible crisis.

For a post-mortem, his body was brought to a government hospital in Perundurai, Erode. His house will house his mortal remains for public memorial. The circumstances surrounding Ganeshmurthi’s purported suicide attempt are being looked into by the local police.

Avinashi Ganeshamurthi, a member of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), was an Indian politician from Tamil Nadu who lived from 10 June 1947 to 28 March 2024. In the Lok Sabha, he most recently represented Erode. He served as a member of parliament in the 12th and 13th Lok Sabhas before.
